Top Three Ways To Spot A Phony

Every single day, people, websites, and people on the Internet battle for our attention and try to separate us from our time and money. How do we separate the winners from the losers? I’ll share with you three great tips for both business and personal life that have helped me and will help you too.

By Terry Lee

One: References and Testimonials.

Every good website should have at least a few testimonials that what they’re offering really works, just as every person should have at least one reference that what they do really works. You’d be surprised how many people I encounter on a weekly basis that have absolutely no friends or references. This is often a huge warning sign of deeper personality problems… these are the kind of people that build up frustration and then explode out of self hate and loathing.

Two: Vulgar language

This is a typical warning sign that the other person isn’t confident with what they’re offering you, so they have to use course language as a petty distraction. Even vulgar language used causally should set off an alarm, because the person may be testing your boundaries to see what kind of bad behaviour he or she can get away with. If I have to make a business call, I always reason that filthy mouths are usually indicative of things afoul behind closed doors, just like filthy bathrooms in restaurants usually means filthy kitchens as well.

Three: They will only meet you at a location of their choice, not yours.

Regardless if it’s business or personal, think twice if someone you don’t know very well demands you compromise on where to meet. Shady people like to stick to their “comfort zones”. If someone seems pushy that you meet at a nightlife spot, suggest the possibility of a coffee house instead. If they don’t mind the change of venue, then you might consider going out to party with them after all.
